Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins. In this procedure, a sclerosant, a solution that causes the veins to clot, is injected into the affected veins.
This causes the veins to shrink and eventually disappear. The procedure is usually performed in a doctor’s office and takes about 30 minutes.
How Sclerotherapy Works
Sclerotherapy works by injecting a sclerosant solution into the vein using a small needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to scar and collapse. The collapsed vein is then reabsorbed into the body and the blood flow is redirected to other healthy veins.
The solution used in sclerotherapy is a salt solution that has been specially formulated to induce an inflammatory reaction. It can also contain other ingredients such as glycerin, which help to reduce the risk of side effects.
How many treatments will be required will depend on each individual’s severity and desired results. Several sclerotherapy sessions may be needed.
Post-treatment patients may experience mild to moderate discomfort as the injected solution takes effect. This discomfort usually subsides within a few hours. Results from sclerotherapy are not immediate and can take several weeks to become visible.
During this time, it is important to wear compression stockings and avoid strenuous exercise to ensure the best possible outcome. Read more about Sclerotherapy treatment in our blog “What is Sclerotherapy?”
Benefits of sclerotherapy
- Sclerotherapy is a safe, low-risk, and effective treatment
- It is minimally invasive, requiring only a few injections per session.
- The procedure is relatively quick and easy, with most treatments taking less than an hour.
- It is a relatively low-cost procedure compared to other treatments for vascular diseases.
- Sclerotherapy does not require anesthesia, and there is usually no downtime afterwards.
- The results of sclerotherapy are usually seen within a few weeks.
- It is a non-surgical procedure, so there is no risk of infection or scar tissue forming
- The veins treated with sclerotherapy will not reappear, making it a long-term solution
Risks of sclerotherapy injections
- Bruising: Bruising is a common side effect of sclerotherapy injections and is caused by the needle pricking of the skin. It is usually minor and fades within a few days or weeks.
- Swelling: Swelling is also a common side effect of sclerotherapy injections and is caused by the solution entering the vein. Swelling is usually minor and will subside within a few days.
- Temporary dark spots on the skin around the treated area: Some people may experience temporary dark spots on the skin around the injection site after sclerotherapy. These spots should fade within a few weeks.
- Infection: There is a risk of infection with sclerotherapy injections. To reduce this risk, the injection site should be properly cleaned and a sterile needle should be used.
- Pigmentation changes: Some people may experience pigmentation changes after sclerotherapy injections. These changes may include darkening or lightening of the skin around the injection site.
- Allergic reaction: There is a risk of an allergic reaction to the sclerosing solution used in sclerotherapy injections. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, itching, and swelling.
- Vein thrombosis: The risk of vein thrombosis (blood clot) is increased with sclerotherapy injections. To reduce this risk, the injection site should be properly cleaned and a sterile needle should be used.
Sclerotherapy treatment costs will depend on the individual patient and their specific needs. Generally, the costs will depend on the extent of the veins that need to be treated, as well as the type of sclerotherapy used.
During an initial consultation, a doctor will be able to provide a detailed quote for the treatment, taking into account all of the individual’s needs.
The cost will also depend on the individual’s insurance coverage if they have any.
